The policy would apply to all children under the age of 18 convicted of manslaughter, serious harm such as wounding, break and entry, robbery, stealing cars and dangerous operation of vehicles. It would mean they would be sentenced under the regular criminal code, rather than the youth justice act, which has special protections for children.
“This is a dreadfully cruel step in the wrong direction,” she said. “We know that so many children who are connected to the youth justice system are growing up in some of the most disadvantaged circumstances. So many of these children are victims themselves, victims of domestic and family violence, often are living in poverty, without enough food to eat and without proper shelter.”
Queensland’s prison system currently holds 140% of the number of people it was built to accomodate, with many inmates sharing cells in bunk beds.
