Comments by Annastacia Palaszczuk on limiting rent increases have been praised by some economists and panned by the real estate sector

On Tuesday the Real Estate Institute of Queensland demanded the government “immediately withdraw” its comments.

“The thought bubble announcement yesterday around contemplating rent controls shows a government with seemingly no grasp on basic economics,” Mercorella said in a press release.Media reports have included warnings of a “bloodbath”, with “investors tipped to flee the state” if rent controls were introduced. But the chief executive of the Queensland Council of Social Service, Aimee McVeigh, said the government needed to act, with the state facing the worst rent inflation in the nation.

Tenants Queensland’s chief executive, Penny Carr, urged the government to hold its nerve and limit rent increases to 10% above CPI. The deputy premier, Steven Miles, said rents will not be frozen, as investors “will need to see an increased return” due to inflation and rising interest rates.

The Premier is showing “leadership” and listening to the many ordinary Queenslanders out there who are “hurting,” Professor McVeigh told Sky News Australia. “The regulations that we would ask for would just set a ceiling to make it really clear how far your rent can be raised and make sure that it can only happen once a year.”

Rockhampton maternity ward ‘bursting at the seams’ amid state crisisRockhampton maternity ward ‘bursting at the seams’ amid state crisisSky News host Amanda Stoker says Rockhampton’s maternity ward is “bursting at the seams” as Queensland is suffering a maternity services crisis. Her comments come as this week marks 250 days since Queensland Labor cut off maternity services in Gladstone, which holds a population of 30,000. “When the baby is on the way, you need to travel over 100 kilometres up the Bruce Highway and hope that he or she doesn’t arrive too quickly,” Ms Stoker said. “Of course, in central Queensland most people live much further away either on properties or with other children to care for, and remote locations from extended family means that relocating to Rocky weeks before baby is due just isn’t an option. “Queensland may well be right now the one place in the developed world where the danger to the health of mothers and babies during childbirth is on the rise and that’s pretty appalling.”
