Federal Greens leader Adam Bandt has slammed the NSW state government’s move to extend the life of Eraring, Australia’s largest coal-fired power station, until at least mid-2027, saying “coal and gas are the main causes of the climate crisis”. “This isn’t about Labor keeping the lights on. This is about Labor making the floods and fires worse,” Bandt told Insiders on Sunday. “Coal and gas are the main causes of the climate crisis.
” The Minns government and Origin agreed to extend the life of the coal-fired power station for at least two more years until August 2027, and for it to produce at least six terawatt hours of power a year to help avoid shortfalls in the eastern states’ National Electricity Market. Under the deal, Origin can call on the state to subsidise the plant’s operating and capital – up to $225 million a year – if the plant runs at a loss.
