A Queens baby shower turned into a deadly bloodbath when gunfire erupted, leaving one man dead and three others injured. Seven people have been indicted in connection with the May 4 shooting in Richmond Hill, which occurred during a gathering of over 40 people, including children. Among those indicted are Lagarthucin LeGrand, an expectant grandfather, and his son Lagarthucin Jr., both associated with a Brooklyn cult family previously led by convicted killer and rapist DeVernon LeGrand.
Video footage captured the elder LeGrand being handed a gun, which he then attempted to conceal in a tray of rice. His son allegedly covered the tray, which police later discovered containing a 9mm Sig Sauer pistol inside a trash bag. The bullet recovered from the slain man's body matched the gun found in the rice tray. Lagarthucin Jr. allegedly confessed to police, stating, “I was helping that n—a; I did it.” Lagarthucin LeGrand is facing up to 11 years in prison on charges including weapon possession and evidence tampering. His son is facing a single evidence-tampering charge and could be incarcerated for up to four years. Four others — Michael Hammond, Jermaine Orr, Javed Duncan, and Jameer Bennett — were indicted on weapon possession, reckless endangerment, and child endangerment charges, facing up to 15 years in prison. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz stated, “An event that was supposed to be the celebration of a new life turned into a deadly bloodbath when gunfire erupted both inside and outside a party venue.” The LeGrand family has a history of notoriety, with DeVernon LeGrand operating a fraudulent Brooklyn “church” for two decades. This church was known for drug and alcohol use, and teenagers were coerced into joining the cult and raising funds by posing as nuns and begging for change in tourist areas. DeVernon LeGrand's reign of terror ended after he was convicted of rape and later, murder
