BREAKING: the Queen’s funeral and her lying-in-state is said to have cost the government £161.7m.

The full cost of the Queen's funeral and her lying-in-state has been revealed.Last year more than 250,000 people queued for five days to pay their respects to Her Majesty as she lay-in-state in Westminster Hall.

At times 'the queue' was more than 24 hours long, as mourners got in line to share a moment with the former monarch who died on September 8. The number was fewer than the total to see her father King George VI lie in state over five days, which is thought to have been 305,806.John Glen, chief secretary to the Treasury, said the government's priority at the time had been to make sure ‘these events ran smoothly and with the appropriate level of dignity, while at all times ensuring the safety and security of the public’.

In a written ministerial statement made to Parliament, Mr Glen said the Treasury had provided additional funding where necessary and the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland governments were ‘fully’ refunded for their respective costs.• Department for Transport - £2.565m
