Dave Altavilla has lived and breathed Semiconductors and Computing for over 25 years, previously as a Sales Engineer and Global Account Manager for leading Silicon Valley chip manufacturers.

Today, Qualcomm took the wraps off more details, additional platform models and performance of its Snapdragon X AI PC platform offering. In addition to fleshing out the full product stack of its new Snapdragon X Elite laptop processors, the company introduced a new midrange variant, dubbed Snapdragon X Plus, for AI-enabled mainstream PCs, in a more modest power envelope for even better battery life.

You might note that both CPU core clock speeds and core counts are actually lower than most higher-end Intel or AMD X86 CPU SKUs currently, and more aligned with Apple’s M3 Pro products in that regard. And while Apple Silicon is also based on a custom, proprietary Arm core architecture, Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus variants all have the same size CPU cores, rather than a big-little performance core and efficiency core topology like Apple and Intel.

In fact, Qualcomm is claiming Snapdragon X Plus, like Snapdragon X Elite, will be faster than Apple’s M3 product, though the company didn’t delineate what version of M3, M3 Pro or M3 Max silicon it is comparing against in this slide. Regardless, when the time comes and we can get hands on retail-ready laptops that are Snapdragon X-powered , it will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Beyond that, the proof points will come out sooner than later, once Snapdragon X AI PCs hit retail. Later this year, however, we’ll also see platform updates from Intel and AMD. In fact, it appears to be shaping up to be very busy Q4 tech launch season, and I’ll likely be drinking from the firehose and burning some midnight oil, so to speak.
