Opposition Leader David Crisafulli explained his U-turn using a key plank of the Voice referendum’s No campaign.

The Queensland LNP opposition has dropped its support for the previously bipartisan Path to Treaty program with First Nations people.

In a News Corp opinion piece on Thursday, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli leaned into a key plank of the No campaign led by his federal colleagues in the failed Voice referendum, which was resoundingly rejected in Queensland.“In the days since the referendum as I have travelled throughout the state, it has become clear to me the Path to Treaty will only create further division,” he wrote., three federal electorates around Brisbane voted Yes, while two others were close.

Polling for this masthead before the vote found the claim pushed by the federal LNP that the proposal would divide the country by race wasCrisafulli, who voted against the Voice but did not actively campaign or stop his MPs from doing so for either side, said the state LNP changed its stance on the treaty to avoid further division. This will create a policy rift with the state Labor government, which is lagging in the polls ahead of an election in 12 months.

“It’s clear to me Queenslanders do not want to continue down a path that leads to more division and uncertainty. “We must find a better way forward to improve the lives of Indigenous Queenslanders that unites us all in this cause.”One Nation leader Pauline Hanson demanded Crisafulli end the LNP’s support for the “divisive” treaty this week after the referendum result.Mick Gooda, a Gangulu man from central Queensland and a member of the Treaty Advancement Committee that helped shape the laws, this week said treaties negotiated by individual First Nations groups would be a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity.
