I love to learn and share the amazing hardware and services being built to enable Artificial Intelligence, the next big thing in technology.
Qiskit has emerged as the go-to development platform for quantum coders, with over 550,000 users developing quantum circuits to run on quantum machines from eight vendors.
IBM Research launched Qiskit in 2017 to provide developers with a platform for coding in the strange new world of quantum computers. As an open-source Software Developer Kit , external supporters continually enhance the platform. IBM says the latest version contains over 8000 enhancements from over 500 contributors. The Python-based tool kit has now reached the maturity and performance stage, and IBM has decided it is ready for prime-time with the new 1.0 release. Let's take a look.
Both the development and the runtime environments have improved with this new release. Qiskit Runtime operates as a cloud-based service, which means you can access it remotely and pay only for what you use. Additionally, it utilizes containerization technology, which creates a self-contained environment for running programs, ensuring consistency and efficiency.
The new 1.0 version of the SDK enables developers to construct dynamic circuits with loops, branches, and classical expressions. The new transpiler obtains shorter depth circuits with 16x faster transpilation times, requiring 23% fewer gates tested across six 100-qubit algorithms.IBM has also been converting performance-critical areas of the SDK to a more efficient compiled language, called Rust, from the original interpreted Python code initially used to flesh out the SDK’s functionality.
