Qantas has reached an agreement with the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) to avoid going to court over its controversial flight cancellations policy.

Qantas commences $20 million remediation program for impacted travellers, agrees to pay civil penalty in settlement with ACCC

Qantas has dodged a court battle with consumer watchdog ACCC over its post-COVID flight cancellation practices, with a $20 million compensation program announced for impacted customers. Qantas has reached an agreement with the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission to avoid going to court over its controversial flight cancellations policy.

The consumer watchdog's case against the airline related to flight cancellation practices following the restart of operations post-COVID - which extended through to the end of August 2023 - when steps were taken to ensure that processing of cancellation decisions occurred promptly. It was alleged Qantas undertook wrongful acceptance of payment, including receiving payment for a service it did not, and had no intention of, providing.

The ACCC has agreed to retract the allegations provided Qantas compensate all impacted passengers under a $20 million remediation program and agree to pay a civil penalty of up to $100 million if ordered by the Federal Court.
