Never bet against the U.S. consumer. That is a cliché because it is usually true. Economists at Citigroup say consumption will be the biggest driver of third-quarter GDP when the data is released.
'Already-released monthly data on personal consumption show strong spending to start the quarter in July, real spending holding flat at a high level in August, and an increase in retail sales suggesting a continued rise in September. With the exception of Q1, when seasonal adjustment issues impacted spending data around the holiday season, goods spending should rise at the strongest pace since 2021,' they say.
