The senior captain has become a stalwart in the secondary.

Rutgers defensive back Robert Longerbeam breaks up a pass to Indiana wide receiver Cam Camper during the second half of an NCAA college football game in Bloomington, Ind., Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. Rutgers defeated Indiana 31-14.

Before he was a captain for the Scarlet Knights and the team’s most-reliable pass defender, Longerbeam was a long-armed, skinny recruit who had a nickname too good to not mention.Question: Coach Schiano said you were a string bean when you got here at Rutgers. I thought that was an interesting comment. Seriously, though, what has your transition been like from a physical standpoint to get to the point you are now? When I first got here, he used to call me ‘Bean’.

Q: You come from a football family, right? How did that shape you as an athlete and inspired to play this sport?“My dad was a football coach. He was my coach coming up so he was very hard on me, and he knew how to get the best out of me. He knew what it was going to take to get to this level so he set me up to get here in a great way. Then my brother was a quarterback in college , and I always looked up to him. So whatever he did, I tried to emulate and just follow his footsteps.

Q: Coach Schiano was talking about the Virginia Tech receivers being a really good group, and Jalen Lane specifically as a guy who would be picked in the NFL Draft. What have you seen from that group and what do you think of the challenge?“They’re just really good. They’re talented on film. They run good routes. It looked like him and the quarterback have a great connection so they know how to get him open. We just got cover.
