“In Oakland, it could be two or three years before we get a binding agreement. … It’s disconcerting because we would lose our league revenue and the team would be in worse shape than it…

The city of Oakland appears closer than ever to losing its last remaining professional sports team.

Owner John Fisher’s progress in Las Vegas paired with stalled talks to develop the Howard Terminal site in Oakland has team officials all but ruling out any future plays for the A’s to stay in Oakland or any other Northern California location. The A’s have been in Oakland since they moved from Kansas City in 1968. The team says their efforts to build in Oakland should show the team’s loyal, local fan base built over 55 years that they care. Ultimately, though, Fisher and MLB appear to have chosen to abandon them rather than sell to an owner that can keep the team local.

We’ve accomplished so much – EIR certified, BCDC vote, we won lawsuits, got bills through the state legislature. You could write movies on all the approvals we got. But if you look out forward at when we can open a stadium in Oakland, it’s seven or eight years off. And with our current situation, the Coliseum being so untenable, and playing at a stadium that’s 10 years past its useful life, that timeline is not satisfactory to all the key stakeholders, including the league.

What do you think of Mayor Sheng Thao’s assertion that you were using Oakland to get a better deal in Las Vegas?
