MISSION, Texas - What started as a routine inspection at the Anzalduas International Bridge ended with a startling discovery of more than 160 reptiles, frogs, and spiders stuffed inside a single truck.

The discovery was made on October 22, when CBP officers encountered a silver Toyota attempting to leave the U.S. for Mexico. A closer inspection revealed dozens of snakes, lizards, frogs, and spiders hidden within the vehicle. “The smuggling of exotic pets has been on the rise in our area,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry. “We work closely with our partners at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect and preserve these creatures and ensure that importations and exportations of wildlife adhere to all applicable federal requirements.” Among the 163 creatures found were 24 royal pythons, 10 albino milk snakes, 3 bearded dragons, 4 tarantulas, 3 savannah monitors, and 2 centipedes, along with dozens of other snakes, frogs, and lizards representing more than 30 species.
