Russian President Vladimir Putin has resurrected the Intervision Song Contest, a Soviet-era alternative to Eurovision, as a platform to challenge what he views as the decline of Western moral values.

Russia n President Vladimir Putin has ordered the revival of Intervision , the Soviet-era answer to the Eurovision Song Contest, as part of an effort to counter what he perceives as the decadence of modern Western culture. Putin signed a decree on Monday for Intervision Song Contest to be held in Moscow this year and instructed senior Kremlin and government officials to prepare for the event.

The contest aims to attract countries considered 'friendly' to Russia, including China, Cuba, Brazil, and former Soviet republics like Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Belarus.Intervision, originally launched under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in the 1960s, served as an alternative to the capitalist Eurovision Song Contest, uniting Moscow's allies in Eastern Europe and other communist nations like Cuba. In contrast to Eurovision, which often celebrates LGBT+ themes and performers, Intervision will adopt a more sober tone, according to documents reviewed by Reuters. These documents emphasize respect for 'traditional universal, spiritual, and family values.' The planning documents specify that artists may not perform songs that incite violence, humiliate societal honor and dignity, or include political themes. Putin has increasingly positioned Russia as a defender of traditional family values and asserts that the West has lost its moral compass in its pursuit of excessive individualism and disregard for religious traditions. Russia participated in Eurovision 23 times from 1994, but as relations with the West deteriorated, it began considering reviving the Soviet-era Intervision, particularly after Conchita Wurst, an Austrian drag queen known as 'the bearded lady,' won the contest in 2014, the year Putin annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Russia's participation in Eurovision was suspended in 2022 following Putin's invasion of Ukraine
