“Putting Putin above the American people and his own family,“ observed one Democratic senator. “Almost a little too on the nose.“

A framed photo of President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on display in the White House has raised eyebrows ahead of fresh attempts to negotiate a peace deal for Ukraine kicking off later this week.

PBS White House correspondent, Elizabeth Landers, published an image on Tuesday of Putin and Trump standing together at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, framed and hung on the wall close to the West Wing. The two leaders met at the Anchorage military base in August 2025. Trump — quite literally — rolled out the red carpet for the Russian leader and was pictured warmly greeting him. For many Ukrainians, the summit was an indication that the war-torn country was being sidelined by its most important ally, and that the White House had once again shuffled closer to Moscow than to Kyiv. The framed photograph sits above a separate photograph of Trump with one of his grandchildren. “Putting Putin above the American people and his own family,“ Virginia Democrat Mark Warner, vice-chair of the Senate intelligence committee, said in response to the post. “Almost a little too on the nose.“ President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on August 15, 2025 in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a developing story. Updates to follow.
