The two-day meeting, held in Kazan on the Volga River, marks the 35th anniversary of Russia-ASEAN relations and is set to consider ways to expand Russia's 'strategic partnership' with the 10-member bloc. Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said the summit will review efforts to develop Russia-ASEAN ties and exchange views on global and regional issues.
He emphasized that the participants will underline their adherence to forming a just and democratic multipolar world order based on international law and the United Nations Charter. Putin, in a message greeting participants in a business forum held on the sidelines of the summit, expressed confidence that it will create new opportunities for expanding mutually beneficial trade, investment, and industrial cooperation, while also strengthening direct dialogue between the business communities of Russia and ASEAN nations.
During the summit, Putin held bilateral meetings with several ASEAN leaders, including Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. In his meeting with Marcos, Putin noted their countries' 'mutually beneficial cooperation built on good traditions, mutual respect and consideration of each other's legitimate interests.
' Marcos, in turn, invited Putin to the ASEAN summit in Manila in November. Putin praised the relationship between Russia and ASEAN nations, stating that they 'jointly stand for forming a just world order, defend the principles of sovereign equality of states, and non-interference into internal affairs.
' He expressed Russia's readiness to continue active joint work with ASEAN member states to strengthen strategic partnership and ensure security, well-being, and prosperity of their countries and peoples. Another notable bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit was with Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, with Putin praising Russia's ties with Turkey as 'developing steadily,' with contacts between the countries being 'truly friendly and being filled with new meaning.
' Some ASEAN member countries, such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, have either imported Russian crude oil or expressed interest in purchasing it after global fuel prices soared in the wake of the war in Iran
