Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is preparing to face new 'terrorism' charges which could see him detained for life as Vladimir Putin cracks down on dissent.

Imprisoned Vladimir Putin critic Alexei Navalny says he faces life behind bars as the Kremlin prepares to charge the former opposition leader with"terrorism".

"They have brought absurd charges against me, according to which I am facing up to 35 years," he said. "The attempt to close the process is not just an attempt to limit my acquaintance with the case, it is an attempt to make sure that no one knows about it," he said.Spokeswoman for the former Russian opposition leader, Kira Yarmysh, called the emergence of the new charges"mind boggling," adding that prosecutors had only given his team until May 5 to sift through 196 tomes of material related to the case.

He joked he was surprised to see"so many people," quipping he had turned"a little feral in the punishment cell".
