Puss in Boots: The Last Wish revealed a lot in its ending, including the future of the Shrek franchise. The 2022 animated feature is the follow-up to 2011's Puss in Boots and continues the story of the titular cat, first introduced in Shrek 2. In the film, Puss learns he's used up eight of his nine lives, and if he isn't careful, he's going to die.
In an attempt to be a better person, Puss destroys the Wishing Star, which then consumes Jack Horner. Because Puss faced Death and forfeited his wish, Death lets him go, knowing that they will someday see each other again. Puss is no longer afraid, but he is happy with himself and his decision. Another Shrek Easter egg occurs as the ship sails into the sunset, the camera zooms out to reveal a kingdom on a cliff next to the Far Far Away sign. The ending doesn't reveal much else about the future of the Shrek franchise, but Shrek 5 was confirmed in April 2023, five months after Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was released. It's clear the ending of the film will lead into the fifth Shrek movie.
