Purple martins prefer as much as 100 feet of wide-open spaces surrounding bird houses.
The purple martins have arrived, and let’s hope their breeding is more normal this year. Last year, purple martins arrived amid record cold and other weather challenges, but this year's weather looks more normal. While my yard was exciting last year with a thick, tall growth of wildflowers and brush that attracted other birds and butterflies, it appeared to be a detriment to the usual purple martin nesters. None of the families raised young in my martin houses last year.
I expect the real action between martins and hawks will occur later in the breeding period. The relationship between hawks and martins is tough on many gardeners because we have an affection and appreciation for both species, their role in nature and their value to our landscapes. The good news is that the rivalry between the two desirable species does not result in an elimination of too many individuals of either species.
