Due to new power sources and repayments to Beverly Hills, the D (Purple) Line extension cost is going up.

Despite expressing strong concerns about cost overruns, the LA Metro board voted to spend an additional $134 million on construction of the second phase of the Purple subway extension beneath Century City and Beverly Hills.

The 9-mile, $9.5 billion D Line extension project, under construction since 2014, is being built in three sections extending from Koreatown at Wilshire and Western to the Westwood/VA station, the western terminus. Phase one, stretching from Wilshire and Western about 4 miles to Wilshire and La Cienega, is expected to be completed in 2024.

• A change to new power sources because those identified in 2015 at the start of the project were considered no longer adequate by Southern California EdisonAll projects, especially those like the Purple Line Extension which is partially funded by the Federal Transit Administration, require money set aside in case of unexpected costs. In Section 2 alone, Metro will have spent down the contingency funds by $241 million.

“You are asking for another $134 million. What is happening?” asked Fourth District Supervisor and Metro Board vice chair Janice Hahn. “It was a bit of a shock to see those numbers. This is already going sky-high with overruns.”Measure R, passed by L.A. County voters in 2008
