Researchers from Purdue University argue that eight former coal sites in Indiana could be transformed into sites for small modular reactors ( SMR s), presenting a significant opportunity for the state to meet its energy demands. The study, commissioned by the Indiana government, suggests that SMR s, with their enhanced safety features and scalability, could offer a viable alternative to traditional nuclear power plants and fossil fuels.
The researchers recommend that Indiana stakeholders conduct feasibility studies, collaborate on SMR development, and prioritize community engagement to ensure a smooth integration of SMRs into the state's energy mix. They emphasize that successful deployment requires careful consideration of economic, regulatory, and social factors, alongside technological advancements. The study analyzed seventeen U.S.-based and two international SMR designs, highlighting their potential benefits, challenges, and comparison to traditional nuclear technology. Researchers also point out that the transition from coal to nuclear energy through SMRs could create economic opportunities, enhance energy security, and achieve net-zero carbon emissions. Estimates suggest a 500 MWe SMR could generate 2,000 jobs during construction and inject over $500 million annually into the state's economy. Once operational, a 500 MW SMR plant could employ approximately 140 full-time workers, earning 18% more than those in equivalent coal plants. The long-term economic impact of an operating SMR is projected to be double that of a coal plant of the same size.
