I’m pretty healthy for an overweight fellow. My bloodwork is good enough that my doctor once remarked that I had the cholesterol of a newborn and should be the poster
boy for a statin drug. I wish I could claim it’s all from clean living, but the truth is that it’s all due to modern pharmacology.
Earlier in the day, we’d clacked our way across parts of three countries on a train from Budapest’s ancient Nyugati Pu railway station not far from the Margaret Bridge on the Pest side of the Danube to Prague’s main railway station near the crook of the Vlatava River at Old Town. It was earlier than anyone should be up and out on vacation, and although I’d been tired and congested the night before, I felt fine on the train.
Meanwhile, I was beginning to feel a bit puny, and by the time we arrived in Prague and arranged a ride to the hotel, I’d begun to think back through the last few days to figure out if I’d been exposed to some sort of illness. I remembered putting on my mask during the flight from New York to Paris several days earlier because the guy next to me had a nagging cough. Great.
I have several cycles of this over the next 24 to 36 hours, going from I-feel-like-I’m-fixing-to-die to Hey-I-think-I’ll-go-to-Old-Town-and-see-the-Banksy-exhibit. Meanwhile, Bettye had developed a cough, and started her own Mucinex regimen. We spent most of our time in the room, turning up the heat and then opening the windows, and deciding that our goal had been to see Budapest, and that being puny in Prague was the best outcome since we’d been there several years earlier.
