The UK's restrictions on promoting baby formula aren't in line with the scientific evidence
That’s not to take the side of the formula manufacturers. As far as I’m aware, none of the specific claims they make in countries without advertising restrictions – like saying their products are “easy to digest” or “brain building” because of specific ingredients – have, and are just the sort of empty marketing claims we see for any other product.
But to get hung up on the marketing claims is to miss the point: the UK’s laws are artificially raising the price of a product that many people rely on to feed their babies, at a time when so many are struggling financially.that not only have his stores cut the price of formula milk by 20 per cent, but that they’ll accept coupons or loyalty card points on baby formula from now on. Ridiculously, these policies are potentially illegal under current law.
You don’t have to be a hardcore libertarian free-marketeer to think these restrictive regulations are bonkers. Nor do you have to be in any way “against” breastfeeding, which is a great option for any mother if it works for her. You just have to want to make life easier for mothers who – for medical reasons, personal reasons, or just by pure choice – aren’t exclusively breastfeeding their babies.
