Cheryl and Malcolm Gaw's Pug Rescue Center in Johannesburg, South Africa, provides a sanctuary for hundreds of pugs needing homes. Known for their charming personalities and playful nature, pugs often face health challenges due to their short muzzles, leading to financial burdens for owners. The Gaws' dedication to these dogs showcases the importance of responsible pet ownership and the challenges faced by many pug owners.

Pugs, with their characteristic short muzzles that often lead to breathing problems and other health issues like eye and ear infections, frequently require veterinary care that can be financially burdensome for their owners. In South Africa , Cheryl Gaw and her husband have dedicated their lives to rescuing these adorable dogs. They sold their house, lived in a trailer for a while, and completely restructured their lives to help as many pugs in need as possible.

Their Pug Rescue Center, established in Johannesburg in 2010, has become a sanctuary for nearly 200 pugs. Many of these dogs have faced abandonment, illness, or situations where their previous owners could no longer provide adequate care. What started as a simple act of kindness in 2008, when Malcolm gifted Cheryl a pug, has evolved into a full-fledged mission. At a pug club, they were approached about fostering a couple of pugs, and in their first year alone, they cared for 60 dogs, with 19 residing in their home at one point. Gaw describes pugs as the clowns of the dog world, known for their playful personalities and ability to bring joy. They are affectionate, always seeking attention, and their unique charm is undeniable. However, she also emphasizes that prospective owners must be prepared for the breed's health challenges and the inevitable shedding. The rescue center operates on a strict routine, ensuring each pug receives proper care, including medication, grooming, and ample playtime. Despite their best efforts, the center faces a constant influx of pugs needing help. The substantial veterinary bills, estimated at nearly $40,000 annually, highlight the financial burden associated with caring for these dogs. Gaw stresses the importance of pet insurance for pug owners, as unexpected vet expenses can quickly become overwhelming. Many pugs end up at the Gaws' center because their previous owners simply cannot afford the ongoing medical costs
