Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has complained in writing that CenterPoint was trying to "make a profit while not helping their customers during a crisis.” Andfrom the PUC on the matter before the end of year. As he put it, "Hurricane Beryl made it clear—improvements must be made." In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, CenterPoint Energy estimates the repairs to their infrastructure after Hurricane Beryl could cost as much as $1.3 billion. Ultimately their customers will have to pay for all of that... and more. CenterPoint's contract with the State of Texas guarantees the giant utility a nice return on their investment. “Somewhere around 9 to 9.5% return on equity," says Thomas Gleeson, chair of the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
