The Health Secretary said the move hadn't been 'ruled out'
Pubs, restaurants and cafes could soon be closed in the UK as part of the government’s new drastic measures to control the spread of coronavirus.
Asked if the UK could follow suit, Mr Hancock told the BBC’s Andrew Marr: ‘We haven’t ruled that out. The drastic measures are part of a wider package of emergency ‘war-time style’ powers due to be announced by Downing Street on Thursday, which includes banning mass gatherings and allowing the police to detain suspected virus victims.
UK officials appear to have made a u-turn on strategy in recent days, after initially being reluctant to introduce social distancing measures to stop the spread of the virus. The World Health Organisation has criticised the UK’s approach, saying it needs to take tougher action to stop the spread of the disease.Mr Hancock said today: ‘We can see the number of infections is rising and that is why we are moving through the action plan to take the further steps that are needed,’ he said.
