Public will discuss proposed Playhouse Square DORA, Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area recommended by Safety Committee
CLEVELAND , Ohio --The public will have a chance to hear plans for the DORA in the theater district and ask questions about the plan which would allow open containers in the area.
Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones of Ward 8, who also sits on the Safety Committee, is excited about the plan.
“it reminds me, gives me the vibe of New Orleans, one of my favorite places, where you can go out and mix and mingle and have a little adult spirits in the mix,” the Councilwoman said. Playhouse Square already draws 1.3 million visitors to shows each year and supporters want to DORA to help draw even more.
“You’re out, the sun is shining, there’s some people who want to indulge a little bit,” Howse-Jones explained. “To be able to do that in a safe manner in partnership with Playhouse Square, it just adds to the element and just ensuring that people are patronizing our businesses and having a good time. ” Cleveland approved a DORA for the East 4th Street District but it’s not yet active, the district waiting for some additional development.
The Playhouse Square DORA includes special cups, signage and a designated area that would expand with special events like St. Patrick’s Day and the Cleveland Air Show watch party. At Wednesday’s Safety Committee Meeting, Chairman Mike Polensek asked members of the Bibb Administration about policing the new policy in the district.
“That is correct,” answered Lucas Reeves, Senior Advisor in the Mayor’s Office. “We have over forty off-duty police officers on a twenty-four-seven basis for the district and anytime we do have an activation, we have a strong plan to add added security to make sure we support this. ” Councilman Polensek also received assurances there would be checkpoints to make sure no outside beverages will be brought into the DORA.
“You want people to come, have a good time, and of course spend a couple dollars and that’ll help the City of Cleveland,” concluded Howse-Jones. The Safety Committee has recommended the DORA proposal for passage at the next full meeting on Council in July. The public hearing is set for 4:00 today at the Idea Center in the second-floor board room.
