About 85 people die in the U.S. every year from carbon monoxide poisoning because of portable generators.
) - Alabamians who lost power this week are likely turning on their generators and while they are convenient, they can cause serious harm if used improperly. About 85 people die in the U.S. every year from carbon monoxide poisoning because of portable generators, according to a 2022 report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The Alabama Red Cross said, unfortunately, they see a lot of deaths after storms and hurricanes because homeowners are not properly ventilating their generators. “A lot of people put it in their garage,” said Annette Rowland with the Red Cross of Alabama-Mississippi. “They may not have a yard to put it in. A lot of people, we’ve seen, simply think that opening a window and running it in their garage under where they’re sleeping is a good idea, and that’s when you start to see those, if not fatalities, you start to see near-fatal injuries, where people have been breathing in those harmful fumes for hours.” In addition to following the generator’s safety guidelines, the Red Cross said it is best to operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure.Surveillance video shows deadly accident in Mobile, killing former MAMGA QueenOfficials say Foley High lockdown triggered as precaution, but no gun or threat foundProdisee Pantry gets major renovation featuring colorful mural Foley High School experiences false alarm that leads to mass panic, parents urge for more security measures
