The woman travelled by car to Beijing after being released from a prison with a virus outbreak. FMTNews Covid19 Wuhan

BEIJING: China officials pledged to investigate how an ex-convict infected with the coronavirus got to Beijing from a Wuhan prison, in a case fanning new criticism about how the month-old lockdown is being handled.

The woman’s full name wasn’t released, fueling speculation about her identity and what special dispensation she may have received to get past travel restrictions affecting some 60 million people in Hubei province. Xi has claimed personal responsibly for the decision to lock down Hubei, with an economy the size of Sweden’s, to keep the outbreak from spreading.

The unusually rapid response underscores leaders’ sensitivity toward allegations of shortcomings in its handling of an outbreak that has infected more than 80,000 people and killed more than 2,800 in China and elsewhere around the globe.Separately, Vice Justice Minister Liu Zhiqiang was named to lead an investigation including the party’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate and Ministry of Public Security.
