Treasurer Cameron Dick will consider shifting department offices to the suburbs and expect more meetings to be held online to help cut costs.

More work would be done in-house rather than outsourced to consultants and contractors under the Miles government’s latest cost-cutting drive.

What is clear from Tuesday’s budget papers is the government will consider everything possible to reduce the cost of the public service without cutting jobs. Salaries and wages alone are expected to cost more than $35 billion in 2024-25 – six per cent higher than estimated for this year – and employee expenses will make up 38.8 per cent of total government expenditure.

“I think every public sector worker in this state knows they get a fair dinkum, fair deal from a Labor government, and we always work very co-operatively in good faith to negotiate the best possible wage outcomes, particularly for our frontline workers,” he said.
