South Africa seems set for another protracted wage dispute between the public service trade unions and government after union federation Cosatu-affiliated unions announced their demands this week

The unions, which include the SA Democratic Teachers Union and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union, tabled a wage demand of a 10% pay increase and a R2 500 housing allowance at the National Bargaining Council on Wednesday.

“However, if you remember last year it was a 3% plus the gratuities, which was R1 000. This means it’s R1 000 plus interest,” said Hlungwani. Our demands for the provision of housing to public servants remain the sore point in our struggle for dignity as many remain homeless even after signing a resolution on government employee housing scheme in 2015.
