As she waited for Vice President Kamala Harris to address a large group of educators from around the country on Thursday morning, Alief ISD second-grade teacher Tiffany Spurlock sounded a little like a political strategist. Spurlock said Biden’s campaign had been “kind of mulling around” and failing to generate enthusiasm. After the president dropped out last week and Harris quickly consolidated support to become the Democratic party’s presumptive nominee, Spurlock said that changed.

Harris, who has long courted teachers' support, received a glowing response from the crowd at the American Federation of Teachers national convention, where the audience frequently stood for applause or broke into chants.

Spurlock said it was the high point of the speech.

Seeing candidates in person is important to her, she said. She saw Biden speak in a small venue in Houston recently at an event hosted by another major labor union. Afterward, she said she was impressed at the way he looked her in the eye when he shook her hand.
