The SA Medical Association has called for the public healthcare system to be declared a state of emergency so that people’s lives can be saved.
Sama spokesperson Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa said equipment breakdowns had led to the temporary closure of the orthopaedics unit at the Ngwelezana Hospital in Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal. He added: He said the operating environment was dire, with flies landing on open arthroplasty wounds due to non-functioning theatre doors.“The contingency plans were to reschedule non-emergency operations, theatre services being provided over weekends and extended theatre hours. However, this is impossible if there are equipment breakdowns, maintenance issues and a general lack of infrastructure.
