The hearing focused on the draft Environmental Impact Statement.
2:37A public hearing on the proposed $6 billion casino and resort at the Nassau Coliseum site brought a passionate crowd to the Nassau Legislature Monday night, with strong opinions on both sides. The environmental review outlines plans for expanding the Meadowbrook Parkway to manage increased traffic, with Sands pledging $150 million for infrastructure upgrades. Critics, however, worry about the burden on local roads. “That’s a lot of wear and tear on our county roads,” one resident noted.
Environmental concerns took center stage, including the resort’s projected daily water usage of 750,000 gallons. Opponents argue that the massive project is unsuitable for the region’s resources, with one saying, “It’s too big and unsuited for our fragile island.” Despite these issues, supporters argue the project will bring jobs, tourism, and much-needed development. “This is good for our county, good for our state, good for our community,” said one proponent.
The public can submit written comments on the Environmental Impact Statement until Jan. 6. The proposal is also facing a legal challenge from Garden City.
