Public editor answers reader email complaining of political bias in Politifact stories.

As the Public Editor for The Dallas Morning News, I act as the bridge between our newsroom and our audience to help build trust through transparency and accountability. The Dear Public Editor feature spotlights some of the common questions I receive from readers. When they contact me, I reach out to colleagues in the newsroom — and sometimes offer my own analysis — to provide answers. Emails here are edited for clarity and brevity.

Dear Public Editor: You don’t see bias in PolitiFact? Do you read it or are you as biased as PolitiFact and see no bias? A very easy research will find that it is widely known that PolitiFact is a left-leaning organization.PolitiFact does not belong in a paper attempting to be balanced and one that reports news and does not try to “make news” or sway voters. Please review this most biased group and eliminate it from.

As far as I can tell, those standards haven’t changed. I agree with another reader, Bill Maina, who urges us to publish even more PolitiFact pieces.Stephen Buckley is a veteran journalist and journalism professor at Duke University. He serves as The Dallas Morning News public editor.
