Strain's case reached national attention during a time where many students from high school and college are heading out of town for Spring Break.DOTHAN, Ala. - The search for University of Missouri student Riley Strain came to a tragic end on Friday morning
News4 spoke with Dr. Josh Klapow, a clinical psychologist and founder of Mental Drive, about some of those concern in the wake of Strain’s case. As tragic as this ending is to the search, Dr. Klapow says it brings the conversation of safety to the table for families – not just now but year round – and he reminds parents that it is not unreasonable to ask your child these questions.
“I think a lot of time, particularly 17 20-year-olds will tell their parents, ‘Hey, I know what I’m doing.’ That’s fine, but tell me what you are doing,” Dr. Klapow said. “They don’t have to be an interrogation, it’s a social contract between you and your child and you can say that. You can let your child know, ‘Look, you may be very responsible but given what’s just happened, I’m nervous and I need to hear more than, ‘Don’t worry mom or dad, we’ll be fine.
Dr. Klapow suggests to parents that a way to ease their anxiety and stress while their child is on a trip is to check in with them frequently and get contact information from others in the group.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
