In a small clinical trial, a single dose of a psychedelic drug paired with psychotherapy produced rapid antidepressant effects that lasted up to three months.
A one-time dose of a psychedelic drug , paired with professional therapy , may offer a fast-acting and long-term solution for severe depression.Researchers from Imperial College London, UK, used dimethyltryptamine in a small clinical trial involving 34 adults with moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder .
It revealed that a single dose of DMT can trigger antidepressant effects that last for up to three months.“A single dose of DMT with psychotherapeutic support produced a rapid, significant reduction in depressive symptoms, sustained up to 3 months. The treatment was well-tolerated and safe,” the researchers wrote in the study paper. DMT-assisted therapyWith many depression patients failing to respond to standard care, researchers are turning to DMT — one of the most powerful hallucinogenic compounds. Previous studies have shown that DMT particularly affects areas involved in higher-level functions, such as imagination. This drug causes a strong trip that changes how you see the world and yourself. It makes time feel different and often leads to visions of meeting beings from another dimension. Although it triggers a very strong experience that lasts only 25 minutes, whereas psilocybin takes several hours. In recent years, DMT has emerged as a viable antidepressant candidate, particularly for its short impact, though robust clinical data for its use in MDD remain limited. In this clinical trial, half of the participants received a single 21.5mg intravenous dose of DMT over 10 minutes, while the other half received a placebo. Both groups received professional psychotherapy. The results were clear: patients given DMT showed much greater improvement than those in the placebo group, with antidepressant effects lasting three to six months.Intriguingly, a second stage of the trial found no additional benefit among participants who received a total of two doses of DMT, suggesting that a single session may be sufficient. “There is an immediate antidepressant effect that is significantly sustained over a three-month period, and that’s exciting because this is one session with a drug, embedded in psychological support,” Dr David Erritzoe, a psychiatrist at Imperial College London and lead investigator on the trial, told The Guardian. Hope for millions For millions worldwide, conventional antidepressants simply don’t work. When treatments fail, the weight of depression can make even getting through the day feel like an insurmountable task. Psychedelics help therapy work better by “resetting” the brain’s rigid habits. This study adds substantial weight to a growing evidence supporting psychedelic drugs, when coupled with therapy, as a potent new frontier in mental health. It follows other trials, including those using psilocybin, which many hope will gain regulatory approval for depression treatment in the UK later this year.Since DMT is much faster than other psychedelics, it could be easier for doctors to manage and help clinics treat more patients in less time. However, as Dr. Erritzoe acknowledges, patients may require more extensive support to process and integrate the particularly intense nature of a DMT experience. The trial was funded and sponsored by Cybin UK, a neuropsychiatric firm, suggesting growing industry interest in psychedelic medicine.Despite the ongoing trials, the path forward is complex. Researchers foresee psychedelics likely being available only through private clinics initially if approved. The findings were reported in the journal Nature Medicine on February 16.
