Exclusive figures show a breakdown of offences, across North, East, South and West Belfast

There were over 1,100 physical attacks on serving police officers in Belfast across a 12-month period, figures reveal.

Responding to Belfast Live's findings, Liam Kelly, Chair, Police Federation for Northern Ireland, said: "These figures are appalling. Our officers are subjected to all manner of assaults, some minor and some necessitating hospital treatment and long periods of recovery. "Whilst we come to work knowing we could be faced with difficult and dangerous situations, it is completely unacceptable that officers should be physically attacked," Superintendent Ford added.

"We, as a Police Service, investigate all attacks rigorously, just as we would were it a member of the public, and we work to ensure the right welfare system is in place for them when they need it. We also work with the Police Federation for Northern Ireland to support our officers so they are able to deal with these situations.
