Christopher Taylor’s trial wraps up for the week, but it’s far from over. On Friday, the state interviewed a current APD officer and a former detective with APD. Attorneys asked the former detective, Sergeant Dan Mireles about APD’s protocols for interviews after officer-involved shootings. Christopher Taylor’s trial wraps up for the week, but it’s far from over. On Friday, the state interviewed a current APD officer and a former detective with APD.
Mireles explained that the subject officer comes in with representation, and then they’re allowed to see certain videos of the incident. Those are shown in private with no recording. After that, they’ll conduct an interview. He says that when Taylor and his legal counsel arrived to view the videos, only the attorneys ended up doing so. Taylor left the room and instead offered a nearly 6-page statement of the events. That statement was read out loud in court.
Mireles says it is a deviation but within their legal rights, and approved by the chain of command. However, it isn’t the only deviation the state honed in on. The state peppered Mireles with questions on whether a civilian would be allowed to ride with a friend to the police station, have their attorneys view interview footage, or turn off in car cameras, which they say all happened for Taylor.
“When you have a civilian who has shot somebody three times with an AR-15, first off it would not be uncommon to place that civilian in a patrol car, right,” said the state attorney when speaking with Mireles, “and when you have that civilian in that patrol car, you would have what running.”The defense will have the opportunity to cross examine Sgt. Mireles on Monday. Court is set to resume at 9:00 A.M. Monday.
