More than 200 protesters gathered to demand justice for Daniel Prude Thursday night.
But the gathering and ensuing standoff with police — the most intense since unrest on May 30 ended in vandalism, arson and looting — intensified as the night wore on.. News of the incident was not made public until Wednesday and sparked protests after family members released a video of the encounter with police.
Callari said protesters threw rocks and bottles at officers. The two injured officers were taken to an area hospital, treated and released, he said. The law enforcement response drew criticism from at least one City Council member as"unnecessarily aggressive." A mix of Rochester and New York state police fired volleys of pepper balls, and officers in helmets and face shields, carrying batons, pushed back demonstrators in shorts, jeans and T-shirts, some lobbing water bottles and shielding themselves with umbrellas.
Officers began firing pepper balls shortly before 10:30 p.m. An hour later, officers emerged in line formation from the building, shooting dozens of pepper balls, standing where the barricade once stood, as crowds retreated south toward Corn Hill.Just before midnight, police began methodically advancing with shields in an apparent effort to clear an at-times confrontational crowd.
