Demonstrations and condemnation of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities are spreading in response to the fatal shooting of a woman and concerns over student safety and educational access in Ohio. Education organizations are urging support for undocumented students.
Demonstrators protest outside the White House in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. Two Central Ohio education organizations have condemned Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities in their communities, citing concerns for student safety and educational access.
HEA President Linna Jordan emphasized that "all children in the U.S. have a legal right to attend public school, regardless of immigration status," and criticized ICE presence for sending a negative message to undocumented students. The statement says the Trump administration's rescission of a policy protecting sensitive locations from immigration enforcement has left schools vulnerable to ICE activities. Jordan stated, "As educators, we have accepted the responsibility of protecting every single student, without exception." HEA Vice President Brittany Alexander urged the Hilliard City Schools Board of Education to support students and staff by passing a resolution affirming every child's right to a free public education. "We are now asking for your show of support – for our students and for our staff. We are asking that the Board pass a resolution acknowledging that it is the right of every child, regardless of immigration status, to access a free public K-12 education, and to show with words and actions that the District welcomes and supports all students," said Alexander.“Let’s be clear, unidentified masked federal agents with assault rifles grabbing our neighbors off the street based on nothing more than the color of their skin or their accent flies in the face of the American values we teach and makes our schools and cities less safe” said John Coneglio, CEA President., CEA is collaborating with community allies to ensure student safety in Columbus City Schools.
