Protesters have begun lining the road outside Broad River Correctional Institution ahead of the scheduled execution of 57-year-old Stephen Stanko. On Friday, the state of South Carolina is set to execute the convicted double murderer for the 2005 killings of Laura Ling and Henry Lee Turner in Horry and Georgetown Counties.Stanko is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at 6 p.m. on Friday, pending any last-minute clemency granted by Governor Henry McMaster. Members of the activist group South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty have gathered outside the prison, holding signs that read “Who Would Jesus Execute?” and “An Eye for an Eye Makes the Whole World Blind.” Attorneys for Stanko said he had been leaning toward execution by firing squad, following the previous executions of Brad Sigmon and Mikal Mahdi. However, the South Carolina Supreme Court rejected their request for additional information about the method on May 28. Stanko was convicted of the April 8, 2005, murder of 43-year-old librarian Laura Ling, the murder of 74-year-old Conway resident Henry Lee Turner, and the assault of Ling’s teenage daughter. In 2006, he was sentenced to death for Ling’s murder and received a 110-year prison sentence for charges including armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct, and kidnapping. On November 19, 2009, he received a second death sentence in connection with Turner’s murder.Stanko attempted to overturn his death sentence in Ling’s case by appearing before the South Carolina Supreme Court in September 2007. He also sought to appeal his conviction in Turner’s case in February 2013. In both instances, the court upheld his sentences. Prior to the 2005 murders, Stanko had been incarcerated in 1996 for assault and kidnapping, serving 8.5 years in prison.
