Participants at the rally for a free Palestine on Saturday said the deadly attacks against Israelis were horrible but the violence should not be escalated. Nearly a thousand people gathered in Westlake Park to call on the Israeli government to abandon plans for a full-scaleBoth Muslims and Jews attended the event, holding signs saying “Free Palestine” and demanding that the focus be on restoring human rights to the people of Gaza, as well as providing humanitarian aid for the war-torn region.
The demonstration is in reaction to the latest incident in the decades-old conflict which came on Oct. 7, when armed fighters with a Palestinian terror group called Hamas secretly entered Israel and killed nearly 1,200 people. Dozens of hostages were also taken and remain in captivity, including at least 14 Americans. Israel responded with reprisal attacks and an estimated 1,400 people in Gaza have died as a result, according to the Associated Press.
Many Muslims and Jews fear that Islamophobia and anti-Semitism will be stoked by the far-off conflict and could lead to violent hate crimes locally.said they are prepared to respond to any incidents involving the Muslim and Jewish communities as well as provide security at demonstrations and rallies.Organizers of the Seattle event announced the demonstration on social media, labeling it “All Out for Palestine.
The rally included fiery rhetoric from a series of speakers, but remained peaceful at the time this story was published.
