Learn how using an alternative DNS resolver can safeguard your family from inappropriate content and malware on the internet.
The internet can be a dangerous place. Websites can deliver malware or display violent or sexual imagery if a child unsuspectingly clicks on a link. While there are many ways to protect yourself online, using an alternative Domain Name System ( DNS ) resolver is a quick way to protect everyone using your home's internet network. Every time you click a link or enter a URL, it gets translated from letters (e.g., Slate.com) to an IP address (e.g., 151.101.130.133).
This translation process is handled by the Domain Name System (DNS), which runs on servers called DNS resolvers. You likely use the DNS resolver provided by your internet service provider, especially if you haven't changed the router settings. These default resolvers aren't always discerning. If a child types in Pornhub.com, the resolver will translate it to its IP address, exposing them to inappropriate content. They may also direct you to websites containing malware. Some ISPs, like Comcast, state they don't use DNS data for marketing or sales purposes and don't sell it to third parties. Others, like Verizon, may use your DNS lookups to predict your interests and preferences.
