The federal prosecutor explained that he had discussions with DOJ officials about potentially being appointed a special attorney, which would have allowed him to file charges outside his own districtthat the Justice Department rejected Weiss’ request to be designated a special counsel. In testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee in May and interviews with CBS News, Gary Shapley, an IRS supervisory special agent who worked on the Hunter Biden investigation, alleged that Weiss told him last year he did not have the final say in bringing charges.

“To clarify an apparent misperception and to avoid future confusion, I wish to make one point clear: in this case, I have not requested Special Counsel designation,” Weiss wrote in his letter Monday. After congressional Republicans accused the Justice Department of being politically biased and giving Hunter Biden a “sweetheart deal,” Attorney General Merrick Garland held a news conference in which he, too, insisted he granted Weiss “complete authority to make all decisions on his own.”
