Armstrong Williams takes on the news of the week and asks the questions you want answered. Don’t miss our weekly town hallAn increase in firearms being stolen from vehicles has prompted prosecutors and law enforcement in Columbus to collaborate on efforts to prevent the thefts.

Ellis Travis, a local resident, emphasized the importance of securing vehicles after thieves broke into his car to steal electrical equipment. "The equipment that they had taken I used," said Travis. "So replacing that, is the big thing that bothers me."Chief Deputy Rick Minerd of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office says a big issue is unsecured guns left in vehicles. "Often people leave guns in their vehicle unsecured, car gets broken into, the car gets stolen, it gets in the street and used for other crimes," said Minerd. Columbus police report that over the past two years, 922 firearms have been stolen from cars in the city, with 142 being recovered.Franklin County Prosecutor Shaylor Favor is working with the sheriff's office and Columbus police, creating a public service announcement reminding gun owners to never leave an unsecured gun in their car. "I believe in the right to own a gun," said Favor, "but there is a responsibility that comes with that."According to Columbus police, young people are primarily responsible for these thefts over the past two years, with 70% of offenders being 25 or younger, and 39% being 17 or younger. "When we think about crimes that are committed by young folks with guns, that is a policy failure," said Favor. "It is incumbent upon all of us, in our community, to do our part to make sure our community is safe." Minerd added, "These guns are getting in the wrong hands. These guns are being used for other crimes like shootings and robberies." To prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands, prosecutors and police recommend installing a secure lock box in vehicles. Travis also reminded car owners of a simple security measure: "Just keep the door locked," he said. "Make sure the door is locked."
