There are three playable religions in Starfield.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Players can choose their characters’ religions in Starfield, allowing them to share a faith that can provide bonuses, which include items and buffs – as well as disadvantages, under certain circumstances.
Starfield, Bethesda’s new action RPG, is set many years in the future, a moment in history when humanity has already mastered space exploration and now lives as a species that establishes several settlements across the universe. This interstellar civilization is exactly what allows Starfield characters to exist, as they too are explorers who navigate the stars. Players are able to visit several cities and, within them, meet several different people and groups of individuals. Among these groups are various religions that the main character can align themselves to, if they opt for it. These Starfield religions are somewhat like factions and, as such, allow players to align themselves with these faiths. This will grant them different benefits depending on the chosen religion. They can vary from unique items that can be claimed for free to special dialogue options that can be used during quests. Choosing a religion is not a requirement to beat Starfield’s main story, but it can significantly alter the gameplay – and give a unique insight into how faiths may work in the distant future.Starfield Has Three Main Playable Religions There are a total of three religions in Starfield that are considered playable, though many others exist in the lore of the game. The playable ones are the Enlightened, the Sanctum Universum, and House Va’ruun. These faiths conflict with each other, either directly or in terms of simple ideology, so players can only actually join one of them at a time. It is possible to leave a religion altogether, which will then enable them to try out other religions but sticking to one or another can prove beneficial. Two of the groups are rather popular and well-accepted in society, while the last religion is seen as a cult. Starfield’s Enlightened , Explained - Pros & Cons One of the three religions in Starfield is called the Enlightened, but curiously enough, this faith is not actually placed on a higher being, but on humanity itself. Enlighted is a group of atheistic people who believe that humankind alone is capable of creating its own path into the future, without the need of a god to look after them. In fact, they believe that humanity should take care of itself and, as such, are well-known for their humanitarian work across the universe. Members of the Enlightened contribute to several settlements with a focus on community work and the growth of humankind. If players choose to join the Enlightened, they will gain a trait called Raised Enlightened. This trait is what blocks other religions from being chosen. It is also what grants an exclusive benefit: a cache of items that can be collected from a chest within the House of the Enlightened located in New Atlantis city in Starfield. The loot is unimpressive, granting the player a few resources, more information on the Enlightened faith itself, and a special Settler Poncho outfit. Those who follow the Enlightened will also unlock dialogue options that can help them with other members of the religion while putting them in opposition to those of different beliefs.Starfield’s Sanctum Universum , Explained - Pros & Cons Contrary to the belief spread by the Enlightened, there is an opposing religious force in Starfield known as the Sanctum Universum. This faith believes there is, in fact, a higher entity living somewhere in space, and that they have bestowed the technology behind grav drives to humanity so that they can be found. This godly creature is said to be responsible for creating the universe itself. This group is fairly new in the lore, having appeared only a few years before the events of the game. Nevertheless, it has a large following and is established across several cities in the open-world map of Starfield. The benefits of aligning oneself to the Sanctum Universum are quite similar to those of the Enlightened. By doing this, players will unlock the Raised Universal trait in Starfield, which will block any other religions and also grant a special chest full of loot. The contents of the cache, however, are also unimpressive. They contain some resources, more info on the faith, and a Festive Neocity Poncho outfit. Like the Enlightened, the Sanctum Universum faith also grants special dialogue options, making other members of the following more favorable to the player’s actions and in opposition to other religions. Starfield’s House Va’ruun , Explained - Pros & Cons The third and last religion in Starfield is known as House Va’ruun. Unlike the Enlightened and the Sanctum Universum, House Va’ruun is not acknowledged as a widespread religion and is instead viewed as a cult following. House Va’ruun follows the Great Serpent, an astral serpent who is believed will engulf the entire universe, killing nonbelievers. It is said to be founded when a settler saw the creature during a sequence of grav jumps – thus, a way of showing devotion is by performing grav jumps. This cult has had its fair share of bad reputation, as they were responsible for the holy war known as the Serpent’s Crusade. During the Serpent’s Crusade, the cult set off to exterminate all who did not follow its beliefs. Now, they seek to make amends. House Va’ruun is the most unique of religions in Starfield. By joining it, players will unlock the Serpent’s Embrace trait, which has its own set of benefits and disadvantages. This trait will grant a buff to HP and oxygen that lasts for four hours. This buff will become a debuff to health and oxygen after the four hours expire. To cleanse the debuff and refresh the buff, players need to execute grav jumps. House Va’ruun is not well seen, but this fact also unlocks different dialogue options.Best Starfield Religion To Choose The best religion to choose in Starfield seems to be House Va’ruun, as it offers the most interesting pieces of lore in the game, as well as the most tangible benefits. The Serpent’s Embrace also offers the worst set of disadvantages, but these are easily avoidable by constantly using grav jumps. During the first few hours, however, it seems reasonable to join the Enlightened or the Sanctum Universum, as they can provide early-game advantages that should not be overlooked. None of the dialogue options will halt progress through Starfield, so ultimately it will depend on the player’s preferred faith among the three available options.
