It was a town hall to discuss a building proposal that had drawn a lot of attention online in Orange Beach...

"If you really read the comments from the visitors I have been reading, what the visitors have been saying about this whole story, they don't come here for the commercial-like or Destin," said one woman to thunderous applause. At the center of attention of Wednesday night's meeting at the Orange Beach performing Arts Center was an attraction called Pirates Voyage, a dinner theater like ones already doing business in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Panama City Beach, as well as Myrtle Beach.

The live action adventures draw thousands of tourists... something Orange Beach strives to do almost daily. The attraction is proposed to be built in this RV park across the street from Orange Beach City Hall... a heavily travels stretch of highway.

"If you have 285 cars he said, going out, and he said he'd clear it. What are the people on Cotton Bayou gonna do? Sit there for 45 minutes?

" said Nan Pearce. "Because there's no light. " It was obvious that Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon had a tough job explaining the project to a crowd not easily persuaded... saying it's not in the city's power to stop development for the 24 acre plot, but when faced with other projects that might be proposed for the site, this might be the best option. "Whether I like this or not is irrelevant," he told the crowd.

"My job is to bring the best deal to the council as possible. They can turn it down or they can approve it. It's totally up to them.

" The city is a victim of its own success, says Kennon... a city that offers it's eight thousand fulltime residents a host of amenities most cities don't have, but ones made possible by tourist dollars. Those who live here appear willing to give, but only so much, setting the stage for a difficult balancing act between a growing vacation destination and a quiet southern small town.said resident Ron William, who acknowledged it's a tough sell for the mayor.

"Well, clearly, that was... he was trying to make a point, and he made some very good points. I just feel like, you know, I've only been living here about 15 years. But people... they just don't want the change. They're afraid of the change.

And I don't like where it is, but the mayor has the fine job of laying out, you know, what the alternatives are, which I just didn't simply understand.

" The fact that the large performance hall was overflowing with adults is an indication of how this topic has gripped the city. Waylon Armstrong is nine years old and lives close to the site and she has her own concerns.

"I'm not trying to get in the way of people ripping down all the trees," she said, "but maybe not so many trees and maybe be concerned about all of the wildlife.
