A beach house owner in seaside Portsea could potentially face annual tax increases from about $106,000 to $204,000.
Victoria’s top-end holiday homeowners are reeling at the prospect of state government taxes more than doubling after July 1, with another hit already announced before the end of the year.
In addition, there is potentially a $40,000 absentee owner surcharge for properties that are vacant more than six months in the preceding calendar year. The six months of occupancy does not have to be continuous and is assessed by calendar year from January 1 to December 31. There are similar concerns for investors around inland Victorian holiday areas, such as Hepburn Springs, a resort town located in the middle of the nation’s largest concentration of mineral springs, about 114 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.Kim McQueen, director of McQueen Real Estate, says: “Increasing taxes are really beginning to hurt.
