“I don’t think we expected this much opposition,” said Ananda Tomas, executive director of Act 4 SA, the police reform group that led the effort to get the Justice Charter on the May ballot.

Jessica Alzua holds pro-Proposition A signage in the parking lot of the Claude Black Center in San Antonio on Saturday morning. Local Prop A opponents raised and spent more than $1 million last month in their effort to defeat the criminal justice reform measure on the May 6 ballot, adding to already hefty spending to strike it down.

“We knew that there would be quite a bit of money, but not this much,” said Ananda Tomas, executive director of Act 4 SA, the police reform group that led the effort to get Prop A, known as the “Justice Charter,” on the May ballot through a signature campaign. “Most of the stuff on here are things that are already in place that we’re trying to codify, so I don’t think we expected this much opposition.

Though organizers knew the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association would put up a fight, “We didn’t expect chambers of commerce or the general establishment coming out,” Tomas said.warned that businesses will leave the city if the proposition passes because it will lead to “lawlessness and crime” and “tie the hands of the police in order to enforce the law.”
